Josh Doctson in Recovery from Injuring both Achilles Tendons

Josh Doctson of the Washington Redskins missed all of training camp but two games due to Achilles tendon injuries in both heels. The compensation of his left Achilles tendon injury is what unfortunately caused him to injure his other one. Doctson has recently declared himself healthy after suffering the injuries, which is good news for the Redskins. This will be the rookie’s first season of gameplay and he is excited to show the team what they drafted back in 2016, “...this year it's going to be different.” Fortunately for the Redskins, Doctson is still making great strides to get his body back into alignment after the injury.

What Is the Achilles Tendon?

What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

  • Increased blood flow to the tendon
  • Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

  • Extreme pain and swelling in the foot

Treatment and Prevention

Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

  • Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
  • Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses
